The inspiration behind this Juneteenth drop comes from a photo taken by John H. White, part of his Documerica photo series from 1973–1974. White, a renowned photojournalist, created a compelling portfolio capturing the many facets of daily life among Chicago residents during that era.
Among the more than 20,000 photographs in the series, one image stands out: a young boy flexing his muscles, wearing a white T-shirt adorned with a box Afro logo in red, black, and green—the colors of Black liberation.
Through his lens, White documented the socioeconomic realities of the time—hardship, racial discrimination, poor living conditions, and the struggles of working-class life. Yet amid these challenges, the strength, pride, and resilience of the culture shone through.
And to that, we say: Happy Juneteenth.
May the strength and resilience of our ancestors carry us forward—always.
“LIFE, in all its seasons.”
—John H. White
